For American consumers, the most immediate impact will be on EV prices. Chinese EVs β particularly from BYD, which makes some of the world's most affordable electric vehicles β were beginning to enter US distribution channels before the tariffs took effect. With 60% duties, Chinese EVs are effectively priced out of the US market.
American manufacturers stand to benefit. Ford, GM, Rivian, and Tesla all gained stock price increases of 8-12% on the tariff announcement, as analysts estimated the eliminated Chinese competition removes a major pricing threat from the domestic EV market.
Supply chain disruptions are the largest near-term risk. Approximately $420 billion in US-bound goods from China are affected by the new measures, and American manufacturers that rely on Chinese components β particularly in solar energy, consumer electronics, and industrial machinery β face significant cost increases.
