Political campaigns, financial scammers, and hostile foreign actors have all exploited deepfakes with real-world consequences. A synthetic video falsely depicting a world leader making inflammatory statements briefly destabilized currency markets last year before being debunked. The incident prompted the G20 to commission an emergency working group on synthetic media regulation.
