Augmented Reality Glasses Are Finally Getting Close to Consumer Ready

Apple's much-anticipated lightweight AR glasses are expected to launch in 2027 following delays attributed to thermal management and battery life challenges. Meta's competing Ray-Ban smart glasses partnership has already sold three million units and demonstrated meaningful consumer interest in unobtrusive wearable computing. Industry analysts believe the segment could reach 50 million annual unit sales by 2030.

The applications most likely to drive early adoption are navigation, translation, and workplace productivity rather than gaming or entertainment. Enterprise customers including logistics companies and healthcare providers are already deploying heavier AR headsets that overlay digital information onto physical workspaces. The consumer market will likely follow the enterprise playbook, as it did with smartphones and tablets.
