The FCC's Rural Digital Opportunity Fund has disbursed 9 billion dollars to carriers committed to building 5G infrastructure in areas that currently lack reliable broadband. Construction is underway in hundreds of counties across Appalachia, the Great Plains, and the rural South, with network operators promising coverage to three million additional households by the end of the year.
The rollout has not been without controversy. Several carriers have been accused of submitting inaccurate coverage maps to qualify for subsidies while delivering speeds far below advertised in real-world conditions. A congressional oversight report found that 15 percent of claimed coverage areas in previous subsidy programs were subsequently found to have no actual service. Regulators have pledged stricter verification for the current funding round.
