A report published by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York finds that the top 1 percent of American wealth holders increased their share of total national wealth during the 2020 pandemic recession and the inflation period that followed. The pattern is consistent with previous downturns dating back to the 1980s and reflects structural advantages including diversified portfolios, access to leverage, and tax planning strategies unavailable to ordinary investors.
The mechanisms are well understood even when politically uncomfortable to discuss. Asset owners benefit when central banks lower interest rates to stimulate the economy because rate cuts increase the value of existing investments. Recessions also create opportunities for wealthy investors to acquire distressed assets at discounts. Progressive economists argue that policies designed to cushion downturns have the unintended consequence of accelerating wealth concentration.
