The World Health Organization upgraded its Ebola alert level to Grade 3, its highest designation, as the Democratic Republic of Congo recorded 47 new confirmed cases in the past week. The outbreak centered in North Kivu province is particularly concerning because the region borders Rwanda, Uganda, and Burundi, raising fears of cross-border transmission. Contact tracing efforts are being complicated by active armed conflict in the outbreak zone.
WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus called for immediate international support for response efforts, noting that the outbreak's location in a conflict zone significantly limits the ability of health workers to reach affected communities. Two approved Ebola vaccines are available, and a ring vaccination program targeting contacts of confirmed cases is underway. International health organizations are deploying personnel and supplies while monitoring for cases in neighboring countries.
