The Great Office Return: 70% of Fortune 500 Companies Now Require 4-5 Days In-Person

A major shift is underway in Corporate America as two-thirds of Fortune 500 companies have moved to near-full return-to-office mandates, reversing the work-from-home flexibility that defined the post-pandemic era.

The Great Office Return: 70% of Fortune 500 Companies Now Require 4-5 Days In-Person

A survey by SHRM and Gallup has found that 70% of Fortune 500 companies now require employees to be in the office four or five days a week, up from just 32% at the same time last year. The data marks a decisive end to the hybrid work era for many of America's largest employers and is reshaping commercial real estate markets and commuting patterns across the country.

Amazon made headlines when it mandated five days a week in-office attendance, and JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs, and Morgan Stanley followed with similar mandates for their US-based employees. The trend has now spread beyond Wall Street and Big Tech to consumer goods companies, insurance firms, and even government contractors.

CEO justifications center on productivity and culture. "I can see it in the work," said JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon. "The energy in our offices when everyone is present is fundamentally different from a Zoom call." Internal productivity data cited by several companies shows faster project completion, higher employee satisfaction scores, and lower turnover for teams that work in person versus those that primarily work remotely.

The backlash from employees has been significant. LinkedIn data shows that job postings offering full remote work receive 2.8 times more applications than in-office roles. Workers in tech-heavy cities like San Francisco and Seattle, where long commutes are common, have been particularly resistant.

Commercial real estate in major US cities is benefiting from the trend. Office occupancy in Manhattan hit 78% last month — still below 2019's 92%, but the highest since the pandemic began.
